Contemplative Tai Chi Chuan

I’m thinking of the spring days to come; to be able to sit outside in silence, face east so that you’re “riding the planet,” that is, you are rotating in space in the same direction that the earth is moving, or at least you’re loking in that direction, and you are filled with awe at the prospect that you are moving by sitting still in complete harmony with the earth, as the earth follows the sun, the sun follows the universe, and the universe follows the Tao.

I’m also looking forward to getting outside to practice my tai chi. I always slow down my tai chi when I’m outside; being outside calls for it, and as you begin to move, centered in the dan tien, you experience the sense that you are moving with the entire universe and the universe is moving with you.

Tai chi chuan brings great joy, good health, and happiness. I’m smiling just thinking about it. Sit into a posture, relax, move from the center–the dantien–connect the body, move all parts of the body as one.

There is an experience in tai chi chuan of knowing and understanding; it cannot be put into words, but a question can be answered by a movement. It is a microcosm of the cosmic dance, it is an immersion into the wellspring of the universal mind.
