Day 6: Life on Earth is a Temporary Assignment

Life on earth is brief, transient, and temporary. We should see ourselves as journeymen, foreigners in a strange land, visitors, pilgrims, travelers. This view of life is also postulated in the I Ching and is a very taoist view.

Rick Warren says, we are preparing for something better. We shouldn’t be distracted and seduced by the temporary comforts and distractions of this world. We should keep our eye on the hereafter. I’m reminded of Odysseus(ulysses) and the siren. The siren wanted him to forget about home, and in a sense, life on this earth works hard to make us forget our real home, to forget where we are going.

Rick Warren says, “It is a fatal mistake to assume God’s goal for your life is material prosperity or popular success. Never focus on temporary crowns.” It takes faith, and I would add character to live on earth as a stranger/pilgrim/foreigner/traveler.

Warren says we will ask ourselves in heaven, “Why did I place so much importance on things that were so temporary? What was I thinking? Why did I waste so much time, energy, and concern on what wasn’t going to last?”

Question to ponder: How should the fact that life on earth is just a temporaryh assignment change the way I am living right now?
